Every child deserves more than just a place to spend their summer. They deserve an environment where they can feel understood, supported, and genuinely excited to grow. For families navigating the world of neurodiversity, finding that fit can be especially challenging. That’s where Camp Starfish shines as a truly unique summer camp for kids with ADHD and other learning, social, and emotional differences.
A Place Where Every Camper Is Seen and Valued
At Camp Starfish, campers with ADHD are not defined by their diagnosis. Rather, they are seen as individuals with strengths, interests, and untapped potential. The heart of what makes Starfish special is its emphasis on acceptance, belonging, and joy. Every activity, from swimming and hiking to evening campfires, is designed to be fun and supportive, helping campers feel connected and capable.
Many of our campers with ADHD have had past negative experiences at traditional summer camps. Some have been asked to leave summer programs early. Traditional summer camps can be great for many kids with ADHD, but some neurodivergent children need more individualized support: the exact support that is provided to every child at Camp Starfish.
1:1 Support — The Starfish Difference
One of the most powerful ways Camp Starfish serves as a summer camp for kids with ADHD is through its 1:1 staff-to-camper ratio. This means:
- Each camper has dedicated adult support throughout the day. Throughout the day, campers have access to individualized support during all activities including programs, meals, and hygiene routines.
- Staff can adjust guidance and engagement based on each child’s pace and needs. Application information allows us to prepare camp staff for your individual child’s needs. The amount of time staff spend getting to know children throughout the camp session helps them to adapt to each child’s needs in the moment.
- Campers get the structure and encouragement they need without feeling singled out. 1:1 support is simply the norm at Camp Starfish. Each child is paired with a buddy during activities, each camper follows a highly-structured routine throughout the day, and ongoing support with social interactions ensures that no camper feels left out.
For many children with ADHD, traditional camp settings do not provide the level of structure and individualized care that they need to thrive. At Starfish, the structure is consistent and flexible. For many, this is enough to help campers feel safe and empowered to try new things.
A Thoughtful, Individualized Approach
Before campers even arrive, Camp Starfish begins a thorough application and intake process to learn about each child’s routines, interests, and challenges. This isn’t paperwork for paperwork’s sake: it’s how staff prepare to meet your child where they are.
Only the information that camp staff absolutely need to know to support your child is shared with them. For example, very rarely do we share a camper’s diagnosis with staff. Rather, we share examples of behaviors they can expect to see within the camp setting and strategies that are often successful for working with them at home and school.
Once camp begins, trained counselors (with 140+ hours of specialized training) use empathy, clear expectations, and relationship-building skills to support every camper. Rather than seeing behaviors as “problems,” staff look for ways to incorporate collaborative problem-solving to understand what a child might need in that moment and how to guide them toward positive outcomes.
Core Elements That Help Kids with ADHD Thrive
Here are some of the ways Camp Starfish supports youth with ADHD:
- Personalized attention that respects each child’s pace and learning style. With a 1:1 staff-to-camper ratio, counselors scaffold each and every activity to ensure programming is presented at the level your camper is at.
- Strong but flexible structure, so campers know what to expect and can still explore their interests. The Camp Starfish schedule is planned down to the minute. It is intentionally predictable and structured so that campers always know what is expected and what is coming next. However, with 1:1 support, campers are able to take the breaks they need throughout the day and have an individually-tailored experience.
- Interest-based engagement that uses what campers already love as a bridge to connection. Campers’ preferences are taken into account throughout the camp day. During our 2-week sessions, campers rank their preferences for activities before they are sorted into program blocks. Daily free-plays (recess) and electives allow for further choice within the structured camp day.
- Acceptance and empathy that provides every camper with compassion instead of judgment. Needing extra support is the norm at Camp Starfish, and our staff are trained to expect that the campers in their cabins will need frequent breaks, additional engagement, and coaching through difficult situations. This understanding fosters acceptance and empathy within our staff team and enables campers to have positive outcomes.
- Social and coping skill-building that empowers campers long after the summer ends. Camp is a natural environment to develop these skills, and with 1:1 support, campers receive individualized feedback and coaching during tricky social situations or moments of dysregulation.
More Than Just Summer Fun
Camp Starfish isn’t therapeutic in a clinical sense: there are no formal therapy sessions on the schedule. Instead, growth happens through experience: shared challenges, friendships, new skills, laughter, and reflection. Many parents report that their campers return home with real-world tools for school, friendships, and daily life, as well as a renewed sense of confidence. You can read our reviews here.
